I’m a quarter Portuguese. And while I did play an Amalia Rodrigues CD during the cocktail hour at my wedding, and I will probably wear one of those black lace things on my head when I’m 80, I’m not exactly basking in the essence of my Azorean heritage. But then there’s my addiction to bolos levedos. The Portuguese muffins are deliciously sweet and toast up just right. When I lived in New York, I couldn’t bring myself to pay the $6 Union Market in Park Slope charged for a package. So I’d stock up during trips home to Rhode Island where you can buy them for $3 at the local grocery store (baked fresh just across the bay at Amaral’s in Fall River). Now that I’m in California, my grandmother sends me a box about once a month. Of course I’m feeling guilty about the $10 shipping fee, so am now on a quest to find a Bay Area bakery that carries the tasty treats. Any suggestions?
