It has been fa-reezing here in Paris, hovering just below zero degrees celsius for the past couple weeks or so. So I did what any person in their right mind would do and bought a fur coat. I don’t know what kind of fur it is, since I didn’t understand the word the man at the thrift store said, but all I know is that it’s “better than rabbit.” Don’t worry little bunnies, you make very nice fur coats too. It could be fox, but I’m pretty sure the word for “fox” is “renard,” and he didn’t say that. As a former vegetarian with a history siding with anti-fur activists, I’m having a slightly hard time reconciling my new daily article of clothing. Well, not really. Maybe a little bit. But not enough to put it on every single day before I head outside into the frigid air! Plus, lots of Parisians wear fur coats. And conformity is the thing here. I’m just trying to fit in. Isn’t everyone? I think I look pretty cool to be honest with you.

Ivana Helsinki Fashion

Lately, I’ve been running across some stunning spring fashions. Last week I discovered Ivana Helsinki and I nearly swooned in my seat over the Finnish label’s boldly hued tiger print dresses. Designed by Paola Suhonen, Ivana Helsinki “brings delicately together Slavic melancholity and pure Scandinavian moods with white arctic summer nights and endless winter sadness.” There’s a reason why I’m enamored with Finland, and that statement sums it up perfectly. And as if their clothing and photography weren’t gorgeous enough, their website is breaking my heart with its beauty.

Michelle Obama looked beautiful in her inaugural gown. And I love that she selected a young, little-known designer (Jason Wu) to create it for her. Let’s take a look back at some historical inaugural fashions.

Jackie Kennedy Inauguration Gown

America’s favorite first lady-fashion icon helped design this white and silver gown with Bergdorf Goodman’s Ethel Frankau. Sexy chiffon overlay.

Rosalynn Carter looked adorable as ever in this blouson-sleeved number with gold brocade trim by Mary Matise for Jimmae. She had actually worn this same gown to her husband’s gubernatorial inauguration ball six years earlier. Love that economical thinking! [Photo courtesy of The National Archives Experience].

And Eleanor Roosevelt appears poised to do great things in this simple, no-nonsense sheath. [Photo courtesy of The Authentic History Center].

InStyle has a fun photo gallery of first lady’s inaugural gowns. Though it could use an update…

The holiday season is upon us, and with it, comes a host of parties. Of course I don’t have any events that would call for a dress like this. But, if an invitation landed on my desk to some sort of Christmas gala, at some storied landmark like the New York Public Library that would be filled with waif-like socialites floating around in Balenciaga and Carolina Herrera, I’d certainly go in this exquisite saffron silk evening gown by Vera Mont. Featured in my latest issue of Brigitte, it’s worn with a black marabou feather bolero by Mango, and Schumacher heels.

On a scale of one to ten, Berlin ranks at about a 2 in terms of fashion. Though there are a few exceptions. Last night at a friend’s concert at Complice, I met this woman who was wearing the loveliest, Victorian-style, antique lace collar. She found it at a night market in Bangkok. Isn’t it fabulous? I’d like to try to make one on my own.

It reminds me of a pretty lace necklace I saw over on A Cup of Jo.
